TRAVEL HEALTH MATTERS

(PRE-TRAVEL CONSULTATIONS)

If you’re planning a business trip, or about to take a vacation, across a border, or across an ocean, no matter where you’re headed, take care. Prepare.

Seasoned traveler or first time tourist, be sure you’re ready to go, and ready for what might happen when you’re far from home. Travel agents are wonderful at planning schedules and booking tickets and reserving lodging, but their business is not making sure you stay healthy while you’re away. It’s mine.

I’m Dr. Sandra Fryhofer, Medical Director of Travel Health Matters.

We base our advice on your medical history, and the possible health threats you may encounter. We use the CDC’s most up to date and destination-specific information to recommend any needed vaccinations, precautions, and prophylactic medications. Recent headlines about Ebola in West Africa … polio outbreaks in Israel … measles in the Philippines and Vietnam, malaria in many places, and the consistent possibility of intestinal problems, highlight your need to be sure you’re medically ready and protected.

Living as we do in the United States, we’re accustomed to clean water and accessible sanitation. It’s not always like that when we travel. And the availability of over the counter and prescription drugs can be spotty, or non-existent.

At Travel Health Matters, we offer personalized, comprehensive travel health evaluation and advice. So, whatever your destination: before you go see the world, come see me.

We often take the public health benefits of living in America for granted. However, when you travel internationally, especially to developing countries without our public health infrastructure, schedule a travel medicine consultation make sure you stay safe and healthy. Make sure you are up to date on all routine vaccinations, including seasonal flu vaccine. Depending upon your destination, there may be additional vaccines (typhoid, yellow fever, hepatitis A, rabies, etc.) you need before you, as well as prophylactic medicines you need to take with you.

It is best to schedule this appointment at least 4 to 6 weeks before your trip.

Stay healthy and stay safe: be proactive, be prepared, and make sure you are protected.
