Meet Sandy

Sandra Adamson Fryhofer MD, MACP, FRCP is a board certified doctor of internal medicine in Atlanta and Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. She maintains a full-time general internal medicine practice in Atlanta. She is on staff at Piedmont Hospital, Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Emory Midtown Hospital, and Northside Hospital.

About Sandra Adamson Fryhofer MD

Dr. Fryhofer was elected to the AMA Board of Trustees in June 2018.

In her role as trustee, she has been appointed to the Scope of Practice Partnership and as board liaison to the AMA Advisory Committee on LGBTQ issues, the AMA Council on Medical Service, the AMA Senior Physician Section, the AMA Council on Legislation, and the AMA Resident and Fellow Section.

For years, she has also served as the AMA liaison to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. Most recently, she has also been appointed to serve on the COVID-19 vaccine work group.

As a member of the AMA House of Delegates since 1999, Dr. Fryhofer has been active in the AMA for more than two decades. She was twice elected to the AMA Council on Science and Public Health and served as its chair in 2012-13. She served as the council’s representative to the Commission to End Health Care Disparities and to the National Influenza Summit. Dr. Fryhofer has chaired the AMA Convention Committee on Rules and Credentials and served on the AMA Select Committee.

Dr. Fryhofer was the 2000-2001 President of the American College of Physicians (ACP), the nation’s largest medical specialty society. She was only the second woman to be elected President and was the youngest president, male or female, in the college’s 85-year history. During her tenure on the ACP Board of Regents, she chaired the Committee on Women’s Health and was an active member of the Education Committee. She was the national spokesperson for the Doctors for Adults Public Education Campaign.

At the local level, Dr. Fryhofer serves on the board of directors of the Medical Association of Atlanta (MAA) and is an MAA delegate to the Medical Association of Georgia (MAG) House of Delegates. She has also served on MAG task forces where she addressed critical issues, such as health outcomes, health insurance, and prescription drug abuse.

Dr. Fryhofer received her bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, with high honors, from Georgia Tech. She received her MD degree from Emory University School of Medicine (AOA). She also completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Emory.

Dr. Fryhofer was medical correspondent for CNN Headline News (2001-2005), reporting on important medical issues on-air and in-print in her weekly CNN web column Vital Signs by Dr. Sandy.

In addition, she has appeared on the Today Show, CNN, CNN Streetsweep, CNN Talk Back Live, FOX News Network, NBC Nightly News, ABC World News Tonight, and ABC News NOW.

Her weekly medical segment series for Georgia Public Broadcasting (PBS affiliate), Your Health Matters with Sandra Fryhofer MD, made its debut in February 2013. The series included weekly on-air segments as well as a weekly Ask Dr. Sandy podcast video series which let viewers submit health related questions.

Professional

Dr. Fryhofer has served on various committees and panels for the CDC, Institute of Medicine (IOM), American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), and other organizations addressing Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening, STD Guidelines, CDC Folic Acid Task Force, Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Healthcare, challenges facing the uninsured, women’s health issues, and obesity.

She served on the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on Understanding and Eliminating Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Healthcare, which authored Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care.

For more than a decade (2001-2015), she was a member of the ACP Adult Immunization Advisory Committee and has also participated in ACP Connect Quality Improvement initiatives. Since 2001, she has been a liaison representative to the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and serves / has served on ACIP Working Groups for COVID -19 Vaccine, Ebola Vaccine, HPV Vaccine, Influenza Vaccine, Shingles Vaccine, Cholera Vaccine, Pneumococcal Vaccine, and the Adult Schedule.

Patient Education

In 1998, Dr. Sandy became a member of the Woman’s Day Magazine Health and Fitness Advisory Board. She wrote a weekly health blog for Woman’s Day website called ON CALL with Dr. Sandy (2007- 2008).

Since 2008, her videoblog series Medicine Matters has been featured on WebMD’s Medscape. She also wrote a regular column for WebMD’s Medscape focusing on prevention: Staying Well with Sandra Fryhofer MD and a weekly column  Your Health Matters Blog for the GPB website.

As an AMA Trustee, she has served as a subject matter expert to AMA COVID-19 Daily Update videos produced by AMA, which appear on AMA’s YouTube Channel, and some of which appear on other services such as Apple’s Podcast.

Personal

Dr. Fryhofer is married and has boy/girl twins. Both children were accomplished high school and college athletes (basketball, track, cross country, crew and volleyball). Her son finished medical school in 2017 and is now an orthopaedic surgery resident at University of Pennsylvania.  Her daughter completed a joint JD/MBA at Yale University (Class of 2019), with an interest in health policy.

Dr. Fryhofer’s favorite hobby is tap dancing.  She was also the winner of the Dancing Stars of Atlanta, 2012, Judges Choice. Her “votes” raised more than $130,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association, Georgia Chapter.  She also enjoys yoga, pilates, cardio-dance, and weight training.
